The Pyramids of Detroit

From Ziggurat, a series of installations by Scott Hocking (photo from scotthocking.com)

Several months ago I came across some online photos of these structures built from the wood blocks that cover the floors of the abandoned Fisher Body plant in Detroit. Aside from the obvious time and effort that went into making them, I was struck by the idea of building models of ancient ruins inside modern industrial ruins. I’m sure I’m not the only one who wondered how they came to be built there, and by whom.

The artist who built them, Scott Hocking, is based in Detroit and draws much of his source material from the ruined factories scattered throughout the city. His website is worth a look–along with examples of his installations, it also shows off his photography and other mixed media work. The article about scrap metal thieves is pretty good, too.

I first heard about this guy about a month ago from a Metro Times article. He does some amazing work. I have looked extensively through his website and portfolio. Next time I get out to Detroit I’m gonna make a point to try an get in contact with him. pick his brain for some ideas for progressing as an artist.

    Great link. and great find.
